Since their establishment in 1968 at NAS Cecil Field, VFA 87 has embarked on deployments bringing them into front-line combat action in places such as Grenada, Lebanon, Bosnia and Iraq.

The Golden Warriors completed flight operations in the A-7E in March of 1986 and were officially redesignated Strike-Fighter Squadron 87 in May 1986. The Golden Warriors first deployed aboard their second home, the USS Theodore Roosevelt as temporary members of Carrier Air Wing One. The squadron eventually joined Carrier Wing Eight in 1987 and deployed aboard the Roosevelt again in 1988.

The Golden Warriors deployed to the Persian Gulf in December 1990 and flew an impressive 629 combat sorties over 43 days during Operation Desert Storm. They later participated in Operation Provide Comfort, aiding Kurds in Northern Iraq. %n

VFA 87 deployed once again in March 1993 in order to support humanitarian efforts with provide combat air patrols over Bosnia-Herzegovina during Operation Deny Flight. In the same deployment they were further charged with maintaining the peace over Iraq in operation Southern Watch.
